The University Doctoral program in Physics in Rijeka started in 2018 and is currently one of two doctoral programs in Physics in Croatia. It is unique in its project-oriented approach. The program is conducted in English, and most of the ECTS credits are obtained through research activities and internationalization, while only 30 out of the total required 180 ECTS credits are obtained through courses taken in the first year of study. Students are directly involved in scientific research projects and international collaborations, and enrollment is possible only with the prior consent of a potential mentor who, with their expertise and current scientific achievements, guarantees the student the necessary support during their studies and research work. The mentor can be from another domestic or foreign institution, and if necessary, a co-mentor from the University of Rijeka is assigned to the student.
The program covers thematic areas of physics in which scientists from the Faculty The program covers thematic areas of physics in which scientists from the College of Physics of the University of Rijeka and affliated institutions (Institute of Physics in Zagreb and Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka) of Physics of the University of Rijeka and affliated institutions (Institute of Physics in Zagreb and Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka) are internationally recognized: astrophysics, particle physics, condensed matter physics, and medical physics. This ensures students’ progress towards a doctoral degree and opens doors for future careers in Croatia and abroad. Starting from the 2023 admission year, the program plans to expand its electives, with a focus on further developing interdisciplinarity and synergy between different fields and research groups, in order to enable students to develop their doctoral dissertations on the forefront of global trends in physics and related applications, thus providing even more promising job prospects in scientific research institutions and the real sector.
