The Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Rijeka has designed this doctoral program following the latest and most advanced forms of such programs in the European Union and the United States. Instead of the previous program that was almost exclusively based on mentor-led research work and dissertation writing, a combination of various educational and research forms is being implemented that can e&ciently prepare doctoral students for independent, top-quality research work – fundamental or applied – in a relatively short period of time. Upon completion of the doctoral program, the necessary knowledge and skills are acquired for independent scientific research in the field of economics and business economics. The doctoral program in economics and business economics will educate doctoral students to acquire the following general competencies:
- deeper theoretical knowledge of the broader field of economics and business, as well as its connections with other scientific areas and fields
- critical thinking and judgment
- ability to define relevant research problems
- use of the cutting edge methods, tools, and procedures
- ability to analyze, find, and synthesize appropriate explanations of some economic phenomena, using an interdisciplinary approach
- ability to apply the latest theoretical knowledge
- autonomy and self-initiative in their work, as well as the ability for lifelong learning and adaptation to new conditions
- ability to work in research teams and in an international environment
Employment opportunities for doctoral students include higher education institutions, scientific research institutes, development services, and research units that are part of the economy of the Republic of Croatia and beyond. Doctoral students choose between fundamental or applied research work. Those who opt for fundamental research will be equipped for the most demanding research work within research institutions, large corporations, relevant state bodies and institutions, as well as international institutions. Doctoral students who opt for applied research will be equipped to perform the most demanding tasks in the economy, public administration, and the non-profit sector, and will also be sought after by institutions focused on applied research.
