In Croatia, the majority of psychologists with a doctoral degree are employed in higher education or research institutions. Psychologists with a doctorate degree generally do not work in organizations that require competencies for scientific work, such as hospitals, local government units, and large companies. The doctoral program prepares individuals for research work that is necessary both in theory and in practice. Scientific research that is related to practice not only enables the development of science but also directly afects the development of the economy and the achievement of various social benefits through the use of scientific methods. For several years, the Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has been successfully collaborating with the City of Rijeka on various projects, including the creation and participation in the selection process for scholarships for gifted students, the organization of lectures and workshops as part of the University for the Third Age, and the creation and implementation of research on the health behaviors of citizens of Rijeka. In addition to the City of Rijeka, the Department also collaborates with a number of other institutions and companies. The doctoral program should further contribute to the improvement of this cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fundamental determinant of this program is the advancement of knowledge through the creation and implementation of original research. This enables doctoral students to develop key research skills such as problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, analysis and synthesis of knowledge, as well as generic skills such as communication, presentation, teamwork, and a wide range of social skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The uniqueness and distinctiveness of the doctoral program in psychology is reflected in the application of the following principles: inclusiveness and complete orientation towards research, student and teacher mobility, interdisciplinarity, collaboration, partnership with the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n
